Academics

Academics are a priority of a fraternity. Fraternity men understand the reason we are here at Grand Valley State University. Each fraternity has set academic goals for its self at a chapter and individual level. For each Fraternity there is an elected member dedicated to making sure all brothers up hold an acceptable GPA. Study times and programs are put in place to help a brother stay on track or to help them understand how or what to do increase their grade in a specific class.

 

Facts:

For the past Semester the total Fraternity GPA was 2.939, Alpha Tau Omega had the highest at 3.119

A U.S. Government study shows that 71% of fraternity/sorority members persist to graduate versus just over 50% of all non Greek students.

Service & Philanthropy

Many of the fraternities give there time and services to many local organizations through general labor or fund-raising. Fraternity members at Grand Valley take pride in and enjoy helping others. They have accepted that you can't always take, but sometimes need to give. Delta Sigma Phi has been known raise money for and to give their time at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum and Alpha Sigma Phi has helped serve out food at God's Kitchen Food Kitchen. Each chapter usually has an elected member devoted to find service projects and hours for the members of their chapter.
For each Chapter, there is also a member elected to put on events to raise money for charities and for those who are struggling. Sigma Phi Epsilon every year has helped organize Rock Against Rape, a rock show depicting the problem of rape in today's society in a non-threatening and entertaining manner. Every year, Alpha Tau Omega puts on a Pageant Competition for all the women of GVSU titled Miss GVSU to raise money for their philanthropy, which changes every semester. Theta Chi showcases the event of wheelchair basketball to raise money for Alternatives In Motion. Fraternity men are always looking to help others.

 

Facts:

A total of $19,050.51 was raised by all the fraternities on campus. The most raised was by Alpha Sigma Phi at $11,390.81.
A total of 2,890.5 hours of service were done by all fraternity members. Sigma Pi accomplished the most at 774 hours.

Wellness

Every one joins something because they believe it will be something good for them. The Fraternity members in the Greek System at Grand Valley would not have joined, had they felt threatened. At Grand Valley, everyone is built up and pushed to do their best, rather than being cut down. The friendships that form through an organization like a fraternity facilitate growth and development. Both Delta Sigma Phi Sigma Pi have events showcasing the trouble of alcohol abuse. Sigma Phi Epsilon has the award winning Balanced Man Program, where their members are influence to develop in both mind and body. Plus, many members of each chapter make work out groups or participate in intramural to keep each other physically healthy.

Leadership

Leadership has always been a big part of fraternity life. Many of today's leaders were apart of fraternities during their undergrad years. Each chapter has many different positions each member can run for. Some of the positions that may be on their Executive Board are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Some of the other positions with in a chapter are things like Recruitment, Service, Philanthropy, Public Relations, and Recruitment Chair. There are many positions in each fraternity some have ones different than others, but each position is vital part of that specific chapter.

Brotherhood

Brotherhood is perhaps the most difficult concepts to share with someone. To each individual it may mean something slightly different. A fraternity may give you something to be apart of. It may give you an escape or another group of people to hang out with. It may be what you need to just explore yourself. Many of the reasons people have joined fraternities are listed here. These are only a few, and there are many more. Many of the Brothers of each organization have goals and aspirations to do great things. In the atmosphere of fraternity many members have been able to do amazing things, some things they may have thought they would never accomplish. Whether it become the president of an organization on campus or get the A in their hardest class, a fraternity has the ability to push brothers to do their best.
