| Why should I join a Fraternity? |
| Fraternity Life offers many things and is multidimensional. Fraternity is a values based organization devoted to making the best men of society. Stereotypes are misleading and untrue. We raise money for many organizations from a children's museum to a soup kitchen to an organization that raises helper dogs. All the fraternities give service and try to help out as many people as possible. Fraternity life is also a way to get involved on campus. Many fraternity members are in other organizations and student government. Other members can introduce you to more opportunities and interests. Fraternity life, in general, is about giving back to the community and campus as well a becoming a Gentleman |
| What is a bid? |
| A bid is an invitation for a potential new members to join a fraternity. If you feel it is right for you then accept it. The date of bid acceptance is Sept. 24th at 9:15 PM in the Fieldhouse. Every potential new member is encourage to look around at each fraternity. You can explore all the fraternities and receive a bid from each, but you can accept a bid from only one! |
| Will a fraternity hurt my grades? |
| A Fraternity is designed to meet the needs of its members, including academic needs. Each chapter on campus has an academics officer dedicated to helping his brothers keep their grades up. If a member is not able to keep their grades above a certain point, the fraternity has its own disciplinary actions. |
| How much time does it involve to be a part of a fraternity? |
| Fraternities, like any organization on campus, require a time commitment. Students that are involved on campus are more fulfilled with their college experience. Many of the students in the Greek system are able to balance their time and still get good grades and it has been shown that these students are more likely to graduate. |
| How is a fraternity run and what is its leadership? |
| Each fraternity usually has an executive board with a core group of a president, vice president, a treasurer, and secretary as well as a few other positions. This group is responsible for the direction of the fraternity. There are also different chair positions within the chapter who are responsible for the different aspects of the goals of a fraternity like service and academics. |
| Are fraternities like the ones on TV and in the Movies? |
| Stereotypes are created from the few bad exceptions. Here at Grand Valley we always strive to hold true to the real fraternal values of Academics, Service, Wellness, Leadership, and Brotherhood. The fraternities on campus are about building a person up by facilitating brotherhood and asking each brother to be their best. |
| How much does it cost to be a part of a fraternity? |
| Each fraternity on campus is slightly different, but for the most part payments for each are quite similar. When someone first joins a fraternity, there are a few onetime fees that go to their national organizations. From then on, there are semesterly dues that sponsor different events that a fraternity has throughout the semester. |
| What role should my family members take? |
| Teach them as much as possible about the fraternities on campus. If they have any questions they should contact Brett Chapman or any of the fraternities you are interested in. They should have person your parents can talk to. Many fraternities also have parent and family activities throughout the year. |
